Why I added ads to my site »

FERDY CHRISTANT - AUG 1, 2006 (06:36:43 PM)

Look at the right-side menu bar to see how I added Google ads. I've long thought about whether or not to add ads. I've now chosen to evaluate them with the following in mind:

  • Because nowadays it is more acceptable. Everybody is doing it.
  • The ads are not intrusive or put a smudge on the site, I enhanced the color scheme so that it fits into my site, yet making it obvious that it concerns an ad
  • 75% of my readers come into this site via Google. They will be used to ads and often are one-time visitors. The regular readers often check this site using a news reader, which does not include the ads. Therefore, it looks like this should not bother anyone seriously
  • To make a buck. This is by no means a high traffic site, but any financial compensation for such a time consuming hobby is welcome
  • To learn a thing or two about internet advertising systems

comment » Hi Ferdy, here's a little tip: add a at the start of your content section in the HTML code and a related at the end of your content section in order to do section targeting of the ads presented. In this way you can have Google serve ads on your site that matches the content of your blog (instead of only serving ads on blogging).

comment » Wow, that's a great tip Per, thanks very much. You are correct, the ads being served seemed to be too general on the homepage. If you open up an individual blog entry or article, they seem to improve.

I'm thinking of how to use this, it will require an update to my blog software, or I have to update the HTML of hundres of entries manually. I think I'm gonna go with the software update, while I'll keep an eye on the ad relevance for now. Thanks for your help! «

comment » You're welcome - and I guess that you figured out that I pasted two HTML comments which then disappeared in my comment (since they are HTML comments). I will try again here for clarification:

Add a <!-- google_ad_section_start --> to the start of your content section and a <!-- google_ad_section_end --> at the end. «

Yes I noticed something was missing, but found out after reading the helpful link in the bottom of your post. Thanks once again. «
