The rise and fall of Digg »

I'm a curious person, I try to keep up with general news, developments at work, and development in areas of my personal interest. Applied to IT, and across platforms, this can only mean one thing: information overload. One of my persistent problems. This is why I've been cutting down my information intake during the last months. My RSS reader now beholds 15 subscriptions, instead of 75. I wish I could read 75, but I can't, I have to cut down to the essential stuff.
Whilst RSS is great for vertical news, news concerning a specific topic, it is useless for horizontal news. For example, sites like digg.com produce so much new content that it is not effective to manage using RSS. So, in addition to my automatic subscriptions, there is a very small set of horizontal sites that I visit "manually" almost daily.
About 18 months ago, I discovered digg.com. I loved it, a single site with a diverse set of tech news that interests me. I almost exclusively started to use this site as my source for tech news, along with the excellent tweakers.net (Dutch only) and Slashdot. Whilst I still appreciate Digg in terms of amusement, it has gotten too popular now and is no longer about tech news only. This change has attracted a more general community and set of topics, along with racists, blog spammers, american politics, flame trolls and even paid submissions. My search for the perfect tech news continues.
This week, I was happily surprised to discover dzone.com. It is a link submission site like Digg, but again focused on tech news only. It is turning into a perfect match for me, the quality of submissions blows me away, I'm tempted to read almost every entry. As with every community-driven site, things might change, so I'll be reading both Digg and DZone from now on.
PS: DZone contains the most useful Ajax-based feature I have ever seen. Go visit the site and scroll all the way down...it will load the entries below your cursor automatically, as if it is one continuous view. Beats pagination if you ask me!
