2 more blog template updates »

FERDY CHRISTANT - NOV 15, 2005 (07:55:26 PM)

Today I implemented two small changes to my blog template:

  • Improved window titles (requested by Roman Kopac). Before, the page window would always resolve to the database title. Now, the window title will still resolve to the database title for overviews, yet individual links, such as a single blog post, will have the actual title of the entry in the window title. This makes it easier to bookmark individual links.
  • Improved RSS feed. Many have complained about my limited RSS feed. I still don't offer a full blog post in your news reader, but I do offer a description of the blog post, which makes it easier for you to decide on reading the full story online or skipping the post. I have implemented this by adding a new description field to the blog form. In fact, this is my first entry using this new field, so the description should appear in your reader.

These changes, along with yesterday's change will be released by the end of the week. Speaking of yesterday's change, it's been well over 24 hours and Google Analytics still has not collected a report on my stats. It keeps stating that it will be available in 12 hours. Dissapointing, or maybe I'm just to eager.

comment » Dear Ferdy,

I was waiting for this title - improvement. It is also better for your Google ratings, as Google also uses this for their pagerank. You may as well put the title in the meta tag keywords.

Another suggestion would be to change the favicon. Your site now shows the Lotus logo in the address bar and in the bookmarks. «

comment » Larry,

I will also put the title in the metatags, thanks for the tip.

As for the favicon, isn't that controlled on the server? If so, I'm not in control of it. Or is there a way to have such an icon per database? «

comment » Nice work Ferdy! At last I can read a bit of the contents of your post, without having to open them all up! Now, I only have to open the relevant ones! ;-D

If you don't have access to the root directory (ferdychristant.com/favicon.ico), you could add a HTML tag:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="pathtoyouricon.ico" /> «

comment » Johan, as a follow-up on your tip, I found out that the path to a custom icon must be absolute. Relative ones don't work. «
