Announcing DesignDragon »

FERDY CHRISTANT - FEB 27, 2010 (10:15:12 AM)

About 20 months ago, I had developed an idea to build a social platform for the sharing of images of nature. Instead of building some kind of database or encyclopedia of nature, I wanted it to be by the people and for the people. I've been developing it ever since, slow and steady.

I don't remember exactly how I got to the name JungleDragon. I remember trying out various domains only to find out all were taken. The name then popped into my head and it was available. I love that name. I think it's cool. It's easy to remember, easy to pronounce, and somewhat resembles the purpose of the platform.

After an initial development period of about 6 months, I started to realize that was I was building was reusable into a large extent. Hardly anything about JungleDragon is specific to nature. I guess I am building a social image sharing platform. A key point of the platform is that it is optimized for vertical communities. JungleDragon is not a Flickr clone, it is not a personal photo storage service. It is optimized for a focused community topic, and that topic can be anything.

ImageDragon

So I needed a name for the platform itself, free of any specific topic. Much to my luck, the domain imagedragon.com was available. So I took it. The platform will be called ImageDragon.

DesignDragon

It will be a long way before I can even release JungleDragon to the public, but I've been thinking already about what could be a second instance of ImageDragon, a second vertical community next to JungleDragon. It didn't take long to come up with one. I always wanted a good, extensive place to find web design inspiration. I envision an active community who are engaged in sharing and discussing huge quantities of web design screenshots. When I wanted to register designdragon.com for this purpose, it was taken. It was neither easy nor cheap, but I now have it. I love this domain.

JungleDragon

A little status update on JungleDragon: There is still much to do, but I'm now applying more structure and focus in order to get something to the public. My plan is to do a private beta somewhere this year, and you will be invited.

Conclusion

I hope the above somewhat explains my strategy for JungleDragon. It is hard as ever to combine such ambitions with a day job and a life, but I will persist, slow as it may be. I hope you will stay along for the ride!

comment » Good foresight! I think this is the right time that you should start advertising JungleDragon to develop a brand identity well before its scheduled launch. You can even think of publishing your JungleDragon design articles to JungleDragon domain so that visitors can get a sneak peek of what's going with the much awaited project. Believe me these articles are excellent and a worth read. This would also help you increase loyal visitors to JD.

You just said ImageDragon platform is focussed for community specific topic so I have a question for you :) Don't worry its a simple one in fact :P and it just popped up in my mind.

Qs: Are you building any moderation processes to control what is being posted and if it is relevant to the topic or not? «

comment » hi Dileep,

Thanks for commenting. You're right about the fact that I should start using the Jungledragon.com domain more effectively already, currently it only is a start page. Time is what is lacking, I'm sure you understand. I do maintain a dedicated blog at blog.jungledragon.com.

As for content moderation, I'm betting on two horses:

- As much as possible, I want to make it community-moderated. If you post something irrelevant, it should be voted down or ignored by the community.

- Part of it will be admin-moderated. In the beginning I will definitely monitor everything that will be posted. If this becomes too much work, I will rely on community members to report inappropriate content. Users should be able to report comments and images as "spam", "inappropriate" or "off topic".

Does that answer your question? «
